To celebrate my 55th birthday, my husband and I escaped to Costa Mujeres, Mexico—a quieter, more relaxed destination just north of Cancún for a week of sunshine, ocean views, and all-inclusive indulgence at the Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres.
First Impressions
The resort delivered on first impressions. Majestic Elegance is a beautiful oceanfront property with spacious suites and a calm, inviting atmosphere.
Our one-bedroom suite featured a large terrace overlooking the pool and the sea, plus a bonus half bath that made our stay even more comfortable. The staff was attentive, the drinks flowed freely, and the overall vibe was relaxed. It felt like the kind of place designed specifically for slowing down and soaking it all in.
A Culinary Surprise
We’ve stayed at several all-inclusive resorts over the years, but the food at Majestic Elegance truly stood out especially at dinner.
From elevated Mexican dishes to beautifully plated steak and seafood, each meal felt thoughtful and celebratory. We actually looked forward to dinner every night, which isn’t always the case at all-inclusives. It was one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises of the trip
The Beach & Pools: A Mixed Bag
We’re beach people. There’s nothing better than reading a book or listening to good music with your toes in the sand, a great drink in hand, and the sound of waves in the background.
Unfortunately, seaweed was a bit of a buzzkill during our visit. While we were still able to enjoy the ocean for a short time, we had two separate encounters with… poop. Yes, you read that right. Thankfully, this happened toward the very end of our trip, but it was enough to keep us out of the water on our final day.
If you’re more of a pool person, this is where things might feel a little tricky. The resort does have several pools, but the layout felt a bit odd—almost backward. It wasn’t a dealbreaker for us, but if pools are your top priority, you might feel underwhelmed.
That said, there were plenty of swim-up rooms, and guests staying in those seemed to be having a great time whenever we walked by.
Excursions That Made the Trip
We booked two excursions through the hotel, and both are worth mentioning.
Catamaran to Isla Mujeres
We loved renting a golf cart and exploring the island at our own pace. While the snorkeling portion was underwhelming—no reef and only a few colorful fish—the island itself was a highlight. Vibrant streets, friendly locals, and breezy coastal views made it a fun and memorable outing.
Snorkeling Near Puerto Morelos
This was the true gem of the trip. South of Cancún, we found calm, crystal-clear waters and a living reef full of marine life. Peaceful, colorful, and breathtaking, this is the excursion we would recommend most without hesitation.
Final Thoughts
Costa Mujeres is a great option for travelers who want proximity to Cancún without the chaos. While the beach conditions weren’t ideal during our visit, the food, the resort experience, and especially the excursions more than made up for it.
Most importantly, we got to celebrate a milestone birthday together in a warm, beautiful place—something we’ll always remember.
Would we go back? Maybe, with better timing on the seaweed front.
If you’ve been to Costa Mujeres or have a favorite all-inclusive to recommend, let us know. We’re always planning our next adventure.
